In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan to teach what it truly means to love our neighbor.
A man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho was attacked by robbers, beaten, and left for dead on the side of the road. A priest passed by and did nothing. A Levite also saw the man and continued on without helping.
Finally, a Samaritan — someone from a group often rejected by others — stopped and had compassion on him. He cleaned the man’s wounds, carried him to safety, and paid for his care so he could recover.
Jesus then asked which of the three had truly acted as a neighbor. The answer was the one who showed mercy. Jesus finished with these words:
“Go and do likewise.”
